Why chimneys need cleaning
Every wood fire leaves some creosote on the inside of the flue. Light powder is normal. If it builds up, you get more smoke, worse draft, and a higher chance of a chimney fire.
Gas fireplaces and gas logs don’t make creosote the same way wood does, but they still collect dust, debris, and sometimes nests. If it hasn’t been cleaned in a while, it still needs a look and often a clean.
Around here, birds and other animals love an open flue. A nest can block the chimney before you ever light a fire.

The goal is a clear path from the hearth to the top. Exact steps depend on what you have, but a normal visit covers the system end to end.

When you should schedule a sweep
If you burn wood, plan on cleaning about once a year, usually before the cool weather starts. Heavy use may need it more often.
Call sooner if smoke comes into the room, you smell the fireplace when it’s off, you see heavy soot in the firebox, you hear animals in the flue, you just bought a house and don’t know the chimney’s history, or it’s been years since anyone cleaned it.
Inspection and sweep together
I don’t like cleaning over a problem I haven’t checked. Most visits start with a look at the system, then the sweep if cleaning is what you need.
If I find damage, a bad liner, or something that needs repair, I’ll say so straight. Cleaning is one job. Fixing brick, caps, or liners is another. You decide what to do next.

Homeowners care about the mess as much as the flue. I set up before I open things up, use a vacuum where it matters, and leave the living room looking like I was never there.

- How often should I have my chimney cleaned?
- Once a year is the usual plan if you burn wood. If you only light a few fires a season, you may go longer between cleanings, but you still want an inspection before you burn again. Texas heat, storms, and nesting season don’t wait on your calendar.
- Do gas fireplaces need sweeping too?
- They don’t build creosote like wood, but they still collect dust and debris, and animals still nest in unused flues. If it’s been a while, get it checked and cleaned as needed.
- What’s the difference between a sweep and an inspection?
- An inspection is the look and the findings. A sweep is the cleaning. Plenty of visits include both in one trip.
- Will there be soot all over my house?
- That’s what drop cloths and a careful setup are for. I protect the room before I start and clean up when I’m done. Reviews talk about leaving things spotless for a reason.
