Chimney caps in Garland and nearby
The chimney cap sits on top of the flue and does two hard jobs: keep rain out, and keep birds, raccoons, and other animals from nesting inside. It’s a small piece of metal, and when it’s bent, rusted through, or missing, you feel it in water stains, smells, and blocked flues.
I repair what I can and replace what I can’t. Custom caps are available when a stock size won’t fit. I serve Garland, Richardson, Rowlett, Sachse, Wylie, and northeast Dallas areas like Lake Highlands, Lakewood, White Rock, and Casa Linda.
What a cap actually does
A solid cap sheds rain so water isn’t pouring straight down the flue. Water is rough on masonry, dampers, and fireboxes around here. Texas storms and summer heat don’t help.
The screen or mesh also blocks animals. An open flue is a ready nest site. Once something is nesting behind the damper, you’re dealing with smell, blockage, and a dirty cleanup.
Some caps also catch sparks so embers aren’t landing on the roof. That’s one more reason a damaged or missing cap is worth fixing before burn season.
Signs you need repair or a new cap
You don’t always need to climb the roof to know something’s wrong. Call if you see any of this.
- Cap bent, rusted, loose, or sitting crooked after a storm
- No cap on the flue at all
- Water stains near the fireplace or a damp smell after rain
- Birds, raccoons, or nesting debris in the chimney
- Mesh torn open so animals can walk right in
Repair vs replace
Sometimes the mounting is loose or a screen needs work and the main body is still sound. That’s a repair.
If the metal is shot, the fit was wrong from day one, or storms keep knocking it around, replacement is the honest fix. I’ll measure what you have and tell you what will last on your chimney, including custom work when a standard model won’t cover it.
Caps and crowns work together. If water is also getting through a cracked crown, I’ll say so. Fixing only the cap won’t solve a crown that’s open to the sky.

- Do I really need a chimney cap?
- Yes if you want to keep rain and animals out of the flue. An open top is an invitation to water damage and nesting. A good cap is one of the cheaper ways to protect the system.
- Can you build a custom cap?
- Yes. Stock sizes cover a lot of chimneys, but odd flues and multi-flue setups sometimes need a custom fit. I’ll measure and tell you what’s needed.
- Will a new cap stop all chimney leaks?
- It stops water coming down the open flue. Leaks can also come from a cracked crown, bad flashing, or open mortar. That’s why I look at the whole top, not just the metal lid.
- Animals keep getting in. Will a cap fix that?
- A proper cap with intact screening is the usual fix. If something is already nesting inside, we clear that first, then close the top so it doesn’t happen again.
